June 2010

Summer is here! It's hard to believe that half of the year is already over. The 2010 BAHA Spring Blast Horse Show had yet another successful year. We danced around a few rain showers, but all in all, exhibitors and volunteers kept smiles on their faces so all were to have a great day of horse showing! Stay tuned to the Horse Show page for a complete re-cap and show results.

The new $10 million addition to the Kentucky Horse Park's International Museum of the Horse will be hosting its Grand Opening on June 12, 2010 after nearly 2 ½ years of design and construction. The Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries will be the largest major addition to the 52,000 square foot International Museum of the Horse in the history of the Kentucky Horse Park, and will expand its permanent exhibition space by nearly 20 percent.

Spearheaded by the Purebred Arabian Trust (PAT), the Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries will showcase the journey of the world's oldest breed of horse through pages of history through 1.) Art & Artifacts from around the world and 2.) Technologically enhanced Interactive Exhibits geared toward youth visitors ages 8-14. It has been completely funded by the PAT and generous support from Arabian enthusiasts and interest groups. Among many ceremonious activities on June 12, it will be gifted to the Commonwealth of Kentucky under the stewardship of the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Arabian Horse Galleries recently doned the name Al-Marah in honor of Al-Marah Arabian Horses— the vision, lifelong love and work of Mrs. Bazy Tankersly, a luminary in the Arabian horse industry worldwide, and a dedicated shepherd of the breed since the 1950s. Mrs. Tankersly has shown generous support for the Arabian Horse Galleries out of her passion for promotion and education of the Arabian horse.

Basic Facts of the Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries include:

  • 8,000 square foot, two-story permanent attachment to the Kentucky Horse Park's International Museum of the Horse
  • Centrally located near the Park's entrance for prime positioning
  • Exhibits are being designed by nationally acclaimed Hilferty & Associates (London, Ohio)
  • Its architecture displays a modern interpretation of the Bluegrass architectural style found throughout the Kentucky Horse Park

Among the many unique experiences found in the Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries, a few include:

  • A media-enhanced desert cave entrance experience with whispers in Arabic, blowing sand sounds and fleeting images of Arabian horse cave drawings
  • Discovery Oasis interactive kids kiosks that evoke a personal interaction and learning experience by a magnetic card they insert at each kiosk and turn in at the Galleries' exit
  • An "Arabians of the Stars Theater" that shows clips of movie stars and famous Arabian horses
  • The Black Stallion Experience, an area dedicated completely to the literary and cinematic magic of the most famous fictional horse ever created—Walter Farley's The Black Stallion

The long-awaited Opening Ceremonies will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday, June 12 from 5-7pm in the lobby of the International Museum of the Horse. Activities include the ribbon cutting, presentation of the museum to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, organized first tours of the Arabian Horse Galleries and a cocktail reception. Exclusive Sunday Celebration Tours are also available on June 13. The Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries will open to the public on June 14 and is included in regular admission to the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries Opening Ceremonies will be broadcast live around the world that evening at www.iequine.com.

For inquiries on media passes and tickets to the Opening Ceremonies, please contact Evie Tubbs Sweeney, project manager of the Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries, at evie@PurebredArabianTrust.com.

BAHA Youth Board

The Kentucky Equine Youth Festival was held on March 19th at the Kentucky Horse Park. The festival was held o celebrate the horse industry as it prepares to welcome the world to the Bluegrass state for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Events showcased were combined driving, dressage, endurance, eventing, jumping, para equestrian, reining and vaulting. Along with demonstrations, attendees were also able to participate in interactive activities and presentations, as well as educational booths from organizations representing all facets of the equine industry. Brief educational seminars included equine dental work, equine ambulance information, forging shoes, horse tack and horse physicals.

The Arabian Horse Association, the University of Kentucky Equine Initiative,  and University of Louisville Equine Industry Program were gold sponsors of the festival. Several other breed specific organizations were on hand as well.

Several BAHA members and youth members attended to represent the Arabian Horse Assocation. Many stopped by the both to watch the promotional DVD and get a free picture of a beautiful Arabian horse. Thousands of adults and youth visited the booth from 9am to 4pm. This was yet another wonderful way to educate the public about the Arabian horses we love so dearly!

Bill and Henrietta Ellzey bought HSA Amazing Grace from Jerry and Barbara Johnson several years ago with plans for "Grace" to be a western pleasure mount for Henrietta. Grace had other plans. This past winter, Grace headed over to Martha Murdock's barn for boot camp. No one ever imagined the results would come so quickly. Martha's best friend, Bask Elect, is Grace's sire and Martha quickly notice the resemblance in Grace and her work ethic. If you get the chance to see this dynamic duo, you will be awfully impressed with the bond these two talented ladies have formed. Clearly the judges have noticed! Check out their latest show results!

The ladies of FIrelight Arabians have been busy little bees in the show ring the past few weeks. The FIrelight girls and trainer Lorie Henderson made a whirlwind trip to Region 13 and then to Region 14, only stopping to take a break for one day in between each of the shows! From the looks of their results, the girls must have been putting in some overtime to bring home all of these ribbons!

Most of us know BAHA Member, Mary Ann Allen as the "trail queen" of the club. In case you didn't know, Mary Ann has started competing this year with her four year old Arabian mare, Mychava. Mary Ann has done all of the trail work herself and has clearly done a phenomenal job! Mary Ann has been cleaning house at some open shows in Kentucky and Indiana, but finally came to take home some ribbons on the Arabian circuit! Congrats Mary Ann to you and Mychava! We are proud of all you have accomplished!

Mary Ann was recently named Regional Champion...twice! With scores of 74.5 and 72.5, Mary Ann was Champion in both the Open and Amatuer Arabian Trail Classes at the Region 14 Arabian Championships!!

No stranger to the show ring, Jerry Johnson decided to show his two year old half-arabian gelding this year in a few Class A show. While attending the Hoosier Horse Classic in June, the Johnson's and their gelding, HSA Comet's Magic Man, were lucky enough to run into "Junior's" sire, HSA Haley's Comet and his mom, Beth Noteman. Junior placed 2nd with a score of 84 and was shown by Beth Noteman in the Half-Arabian Sport Horse In Hand Geldings, 2 and under. After the classes, Mary Ann Allen was able to capture a few pictures of this great family!

While most of us were enjoying the cool breeze weather during Region 14, several other BAHA members were exhibiting their horses at Region 11 in Sprinfield, Illinois. David and Olivia Stone currently have their 4 year old stallion, Rodeo Road, in training with Strand's Arabian Stables. David, Olivia, little Norah and breeder of Rodeo Road, Rick Tosch headed north to see "Harvey" compete in the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. Harvey was awarded a Top Five in a very deep class. Harvey was even third on the cards! Harvey is headed back to Strand's in Iowa to gear up for U.S Nationals with Jennifer Schmitt in Arabian Western Pleasure Junior jorse and Arabian Western Pleasure Maturity with owner Olivia Stone.

Harvey's full sister, Angylia, is also in training with Strand's Arabian Stables as well. Angylia is owned by BAHA members Rick and Jennifer Tosch. Angylia went to her first under saddle horse show in May at the NIAHAC show in Springfield, Illinois. Not sure what to expect from their beloved mare, Angylia won first place in a competitive western pleasure class with trainer Jennifer Schmitt beating out some big name trainers and horses! Rick and Jennifer felt like they had just won a National Championship! Sometimes that first blue is everything! Angylia is currently in training with Jennifer Schmitt gearing up for an amateur career with Jennifer Tosch in the future.

2009 AHA YOUTH OF THE YEAR

KATIE PELPHREY

The BAHA Youth is always stepping up to the plate and setting examples for the rest of the Arabian youth. BAHA member and  Region 14 Youth Director,  Katie Pelphrey, was named 2009 AHA Youth of the Year during the recent AHA Convention.

Katie is a bright young lady who has been with BAHA from it's inception. Katie was the first BAHA Youth President and helped set the foundation for many of our youth programs within the club. Katie has always been a leader and is always looking out for the best interest of the Arabian horse youth members.

During the AHYA youth convention this summer Katie presented a motion to the youth delegates that would allow a horse and rider switch in the finals of the Saddle Seat Equitation 14-17 division. This motion was approved and moved on to this years AHA convention as Resolution 12-09. Katie addressed the delegation from the floor of the convention and after she explained the resolution she received a resounding applause. After a slight change the resolution was approved and will go into affect after approval is obtained at the January USEF Convention in Louisville Kentucky.

Katie was awarded the AHA Youth of the Year perpetual trophy along with a $1,000 scholarship from AHA.In addition Katie received a dozen red roses and a $1,250 scholarship from Region 14. Katie was elected to the position of AHYA Youth Vice President during the AHYA convention in 2008 and was re-elected to a second term this summer. Katie will be attending the University of Kentucky this fall. Katie will be speaking at the Region 14 banquet in February so make your reservations now to see and hear this young leader of today and tomorrow.   Katie is the second Region 14 Youth to be honored with this award. In 2006 outgoing Region 14 Youth Director Monica Christian was named AHA Youth of the Year. Monica is now attending the Ohio State University and she will also receive a 1,250 scholarship from Region 14 to assist her in obtaining her medical degree.

Everyone knows that this time of year brings lots of giving and good cheer. Jerry and Barbara Johnson of Heaven Sent Arabians have been giving back to the equine community in a unique way for the past two years. In 2008,  the Johnson's began fostering at risk equines for the Kentucky Equine Humane Center. The KyEHC provides shelter for unwanted equines across the state of Kentucky. The equines are then evaluated on a physical and mental level to be adopted to future homes. Often the KyEHC looks for help from generous people like the Johnson's to help foster special needs or at risk equines. In January of 2008, a precious little Arabian weanling filly arrived at Heaven Sent Farm. Here "Sparkle" was able to frolick in her own paddock with her new buddy and come inside to a nice, warm barn every night. Sparkle lived at the Johnson's farm until December of 2008. With a little networking and help from some wonderful individuals in the Arabian community, Sparkle was adopted to a loving new home in Missouri. A report was received this Thanksgiving on Sparkle. She has turned into quite the lovebug and was out and about being ponied on her first trail ride, which we heard she absolutely loved! Yay for Sparkle!

Now that Sparkle has been placed in a new home, the Johnson's are fostering a new furry friend. Autumn is a 12 year old miniature mare that just loves life in general. She has another pony that is her pasture mate, but Autumn especially loves to nose with the big horses through the fence. She does not know that she is a mini! Autumn is super easy to handle and loves people of all ages. Autumn has been diagnosed with cushings disease and requires daily medication, but her daily feeding and medication has just become a normal part of daily barn rountine with ease at Heaven Sent Arabians. Autumn is currently available for adoption through the KyEHC. Autumn would be great as a companion for another horse or would be great for young children to learn about having a horse since she is just the right size!

                                                                                               AUTUMN

The KyEHC is located near Lexington, KY and has horses of all shapes, sizes, colors and breeds that are available for adoption! Most horses can be viewed on their website at www.kyehc.org. New horses arrive almost daily, so the website may not always reflect which horses are available at that time. If you are interested in adopting a new member of your family or interested in becoming a volunteer. please contac the KyEHC at 859-881-5849.

The BAHA is highlighting this special mare as she is part of our Arabian horse community.

Misty is an 18 yr old Arabian mare that has been used as a previous show horse. She now has arthritis in her right front fetlock. She could be used for an occasional light ride around the farm, but she
would need joint injections for any significant amout of riding. She has a wonderful personality and gets along with mares and geldings. She has been easy to handle and groom and does well for the farrier and vet. Misty would love to find a home where she can be loved and pampered.

The Falling Leaves Trail Ride is right around the corner, folks! Held this year on October 9th -111th,  at D Bar K Camp, near Mammoth Cave, this is a great time for BAHA members and friends to gather and have a great relaxing time together. Come early, stay late! We'll be having a barbeque dinner and bonfire on Saturday evening again this year. New this year will be a Sunday morning breakfast for campers! Be sure to get your forms in soon...you won't want to miss out!

Speaking of trail rides...

Several BAHA members recently attended the Region 14 Arabian Trail Ride held in Norman, Indiana. Mary Ann Allen, Dave and Olivia Stone, Joe and Lisa Waits, and Jennifer Tosch were those who attended from BAHA. There were 115 riders who came together for a beautiful weekend! The facilities were wonderful and the trails were even better! Region 14 held several interactive activities for campers each evening. Jennifer Tosch was the lucky winner of the split the pot raffle! Congrats, Jennifer! Everyone had a great time meeting new friends from the Region and catching up with old faces.

Special thanks to all who attended the August General Membership meeting in Lexington. Bill and Henrietta Ellzey always do a wonderful job hosting and we couldn't thank them enough for letting us use their beautiful farm. Those who attended were treated to some lovely weather, a tasty taco bar, and an informative meeting. Many new members and friends were in attendance. So glad to see everyone! Our next General Membership meeting will be held in October at Firelight Arabians in Taylorsville, KY. Stay tuned for more information!

Hope that all of you have had a great summer, it has been busy and seems as if there has been something going on every weekend for many of our members. Bill and Henrietta Ellzey will host the BAHA General meeting at their
Flint Hill Farm on Saturday, August 22, 2009.

The days activities will

We wish you both nothing but success in the future and hope to see you around at the BAHA activities!

They're hot and tired, but all of the BAHA kiddos are home safely from the Arabian and Half Arabian Youth Nationals. Check out all of their winnings below. It's every kiddos favorite time of year...time for YOUTH NATIONALS! Many of our BAHA youth are currently competing in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the U.S. Arabian and Half Arabian Youth National Horse Show.
A full week of fun filled activites and of course,  competition, makes this event one of the youth rider's most premier!

On Friday, July 24th, youth were able to attend the annual AHYA Convention. This year's theme was AHYA on the loose.  New officers were elected and new this year was the passing of a resolution. Gordon Potts and Gene Holloway were the keynote speakers this year for the Convention. Both did a wonderful job of pointing the youth in new directions for the years to come.  This year there were 215 eligible delegates, 134 registered delegates and approximately 80 youth members that participated in the Convention. And...hot off the press...

BAHA Member Katie Pelphrey was re-elected as the AHYA Vice President!

On Saturday, several trainers stepped up and donated their time and knowledge for several hourse at the APAHA Clinics held for the kiddos. Andrew Sellman and Vicki Humphrey gave clinics on halter and English/Country Pleasure. This was a great opportunity for the youth to get first hand info from our industry's most notable trainers.  Both Humphrey and Sellman have been awarded some of the most top honors from APAHA and USEF.

On Sunday, members of each AHA region got together to show their creativity and spirit to decorate gold carts that were presented  for the Parade of Regions at the opening ceremonies of the show. We are very eager to see what our BAHA kids helped get together for the Region 14 cart!

The current report is that several of our BAHA members have made their first round cuts and have advanced to further competition. From all of us at home...GOOD LUCK!!

This Spring was a Blast!

Another successful year for the Bluegrass Arabian Horse Association and their annual horse show can now go in the record books! We were blessed with an absolutely beautiful weekend and no rain! Adrienne Hancock-Leong came up a winner in more than one way this year. BAHA stapled a playing card to the back of each ribbon with the intent for exhibitors to make a "poker hand." The exhibitor with the best hand at the end of the horse show had a lovely prize awaiting them. Adrienne wowed us all with her hand of a royal flush and took hom the gift certificate to Kentucky Horse Supply! Jennifer Henderson was also a lucky lady this year. Jennifer and her gelding,Tazzer, took home the honors of Supreme Arabian/Half Arabian Halter Champion and a $200 prize! Kentucky Horse Supply was gracious enough to donate gifts to the show's High Point Youth and Amateur this year. The winner of the High Point Youth was Collin Downs, while the winner of the High Point Adult was Jennifer Tosch. Way to go!

SHOW RESULTS ARE HERE!

April 2009

The horsey stork came to visit Jenese Briegel and her family on April 25, 2009. Jenese and family welcomed in a stunning chestnut colt, sired by their stallion Temmpo and out of a G Amigo granddaughter. Congratulations!

The 2008 Bluegrass Arabian Horse Association's Breeders Futurity was a resounding success!

Surpasssing the record setting 2007 edition. With over $2,500.00 in possible purse payouts, participation was up in all divisions including the new performance "Maturity" classes. The 2009 edition looks to be even bigger and better!

A special thanks to Firelight Arabians for sponsoring all divisional champion trophies, to Foundation Farm
for sponsoring all champion,  reserve champion, and top five neck ribbons, and to K.E.E.P. for sponsoring
all of the futurity classes.

With the success of the Stallion Service Auction, and all proceeds going to the Futurity program, we want to
thank all owners who graciously donated a breeding and to the lucky winning bidders. The 2009 edition will
once again provide the opportunity to purchase a breeding to some very special Stallions at a very good price.

Come join the fun and make some $$$ while you are showing off your breeding program!!

February 2009
Hopefully as you read this, the bitter cold weather that we all experienced in January is just a bad memory. I know that all of us were saying to ourselves, now tell me again why I am out at the barn when the high temperature for the day never gets into double digits, the wind chill is 15 plus below “0" , the mud has frozen around the gates and you can’t open them, water lines are frozen, tractors won’t start, muck is frozen in the spreader and on and on. It is a well known fact that horse owners are internal optimist they know that with each passing day the weather will improve, pastures will no longer be nothing but mud, daylight hours will increase, no more having to blanket our horses and the foals that will be born this year will all be that special foal that we have been waiting for and that is the answer to the question we ask ourselves in January.

There is not much club news to report this month. Some of our members have been attending the San-A-Tone winter schooling shows. It takes real dedication to show in cold weather. Thanks to Sandy Stewart for
holding these shows and allowing Café Baha to sell concessions. SPECIAL THANKS to the volunteers who have been helping at Café Baha. Good news-one of our special volunteers, Joe Waits broken leg is healing right on schedule.

The Bluegrass Arabian Horse Association’s annual meeting and High Point Awards Dinner was held January 24 . The winners of the High Point Awards will be published in the March issue of the Arabian News.

LOOKING FOR THAT SPECIAL STALLION-Contact Jenese Breigel or Rick Tosch for information on the many outstanding stallions that are available in the 2009 Stallion Silent Auction.

Bluegrass Arabian Horse Association will hold their 2009 Annual Open Horse Show on Sunday April 26, 2009 at the Shelbyville Fair grounds in Shelbyville, Ky. More details to follow.
